Red Barn Tree Farm

Welcome to our Choose-n-Cut Christmas Tree farm! Long before the winery existed, our farm here in Linville Falls was dedicated solely to growing Fraser Fir Christmas Trees for families to pick out during the holiday season. Even as the farm has grown and changed and is now home to lots of grapevines, we continue to share in this beloved Christmas tradition.

Live Updates:

We were so fortunate to only have minimal Helene-induced damage to our tree farm here at the choose-n-cut, so we will be business-as-usual for the upcoming season. ❤️

The 2024 Season

Opening Day: Friday, November 22nd

Last Day: Sunday, December 8th

Tree Farm Hours: 10am-5pm (special hours Thanksgiving Day)

Please note that 5pm is a “hard close” time, meaning that we will not allow customers to be in the tree field past 5pm for the safety of the customer and our crew (it gets dark here in our neck of the woods!) If you arrive without much time to pick out a tree in the field before 5pm, we will have beautiful fresh-cut trees available in our barn yard as an option.

Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, Nov. 28th we will be open from 10am-2pm

How it Works

There will be Red Barn staff readily available to explain the whole process to you in-person, but here’s a step by step guide to how everything works:

Step 1 - Grab a pole! This is how you get the attention of one of our tree cutting staff. It also has measurements by foot, which is helpful for making sure you get the exact right size for your home since there are size nuances within the color categories.

Step 2 - Walk into the tree field, or pick up the hayride. The hayride runs on certain dates, specified in the calendar above.

Step 3 - The tree search begins! Look for trees with colored tags - those are the trees that are available to cut this year. If there’s not a colored tag in the tree, it is not available this season. The tags coordinate with prices and size categories.

Step 4 - When you’ve found “the one”, wave your pole back and forth in a broad motion. This signals to our cutting staff that you are ready for them! On very busy days, such as Black Friday, it can take quite a while for a staff person to become available, so this step may require some patience.

Step 5 - Once your tree is cut, the staff member will provide a tag that gets tied to your tree. They will rip off the bottom portion, which you bring with you to the barn to pay for your tree.

Step 6 - Take your ticket to match your tree with one of our staff members. We always like to see your ticket so we can double-check the numbers to make sure you get the exact tree you picked out in the tree field.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you serve any hot drinks?

Yes! We have complimentary cocoa & cider for tree customers on all opening days (both are Nana Jo Ann's recipes, so you know they're delicious!)

  • Do you have wreaths & roping?

Yes! We have wreaths ranging in size from itty bitty to extra large. White Pine roping will be available in 25-foot rolls.

  • What payments do you accept?

We accept cash, check, and credit card. Cash or check is faster since they are not dependent on our often spotty internet.

  • Will the winery be open during the choose-n-cut?

Yes! The winery is open daily from 12pm-5pm. We recommend tree first, then wine. Your ceilings become "taller" if done in the opposite order......we speak from experience.

  • Will someone be able to tie my tree to my car?

Yes! Tie-on service is included in your tree price. Just remember: if you want a big tree, bring a big vehicle! Keep in mind as trees go up in height, they also get wider and heavier.

  • Do you have pre-cut trees available?

Yes, we bring premium fresh-cut trees from other farms and display them in our barn yard. This is a great option if you're in a hurry, and need an experience with better accessibility.

  • Can we bring our own saw to cut down our own tree?

Unfortunately we no longer allow you to cut your own tree with your own saw. As we've grown as a farm, it is difficult for us to manage this safely, as well as make sure trees that aren't supposed to be cut, aren't cut. If this is an important part of your experience, we encourage you to seek out other farms in our area! Every farm has different policies.

  • Can we pre-tag a tree and come back to cut it later?

We do not allow pre-tagging trees because we cannot guarantee that your tag will stay put. Unlike many other Christmas Tree farms in our area, our farm is accessible to the public every day due to the winery, and this creates too many opportunities for a tag to get changed or go missing.

  • Can we cut a tree that doesn't have a colored tag?

No, only trees with colored tags are available for cutting within each season. This helps make sure we have trees in a diversity of sizes for many seasons to come. We also make these decisions based on the growing patterns on our farm to make sure each tree has the proper amount of wiggle room for future growth.

  • How long does the whole process take?

We encourage people to think of it as an all day experience if you are coming on one of our busier days, such as a weekend, but especially the Friday, Saturday, & Sunday after Thanksgiving. If cars are parked beyond the normal bounds of our parking lot, you can expect everything to take longer. There will be a line at the hayride, you may wave your pole for 30 minutes before a staff member is able to come cut your tree, and you may wait in line to pay for your tree. We thank you in advance for your patience, and hope you can make fun family memories, even in the moments of waiting.

  • Are your tree fields handicap accessible?

Between steep slopes, tree stumps, and muddy ground, the tree fields can sometimes be difficult to navigate. On non-busy days such as Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays, a person with limited accessibility can ride in the ATV that we use to transport trees around the property. This option is not available on busy days, and we do not allow people who are not employed by us to drive into the tree field with their own vehicle. We have premium, fresh-cut trees available in our barn yard, which is more accessible than our tree fields.

  • Do you close during inclement weather?

This is a case-by-case thing, but if there is significant rain or snow, we will close the farm for the day. Check our live updates box at the top of the page for up-to-date information.

  • Can photographers come do photoshoots at the tree farm?

Yes, photographers are welcome to use our tree farm as a backdrop! No need to schedule anything, you can simply come during our open hours. This also includes winery open hours before and after the tree farm season! For less crowds, we recommend avoiding the weekend after Thanksgiving, since those are our busiest days of the season. Since you won't be able to drive a vehicle into the tree field, it's best to keep any props minimal.

  • We want to plant our tree - do you sell trees that are dug with the root ball still intact?

We do not have root-dug trees available at our choose-n-cut. There may be other farms in our area you could check with, but it is becoming a less-common offering at many farms because Fraser fir require specific growing conditions. They won't survive below 2,500 feet elevation and struggle as they get into USDA zone 7 and beyond. Many of our customers are visitors from Charlotte or South Carolina area, so it's not an offering we have here. However, if you're in the mountain region and want to give it a shot, definitely reach out to other farms and see if it's something they offer.

  • Are you dog-friendly?

Yes! We just ask that your furry friends are kept on a leash at all times, for their safety.

  • How do we sign up for the Christmas Tree Portrait Session Fundraiser?

Bramble Media is hosting a fundraiser Saturday, November 23rd, from 1-4 PM at our farm to raise money for Avery County families in need in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. These will be Mini Christmas Tree Portrait Sessions and 100% of the proceeds go directly to “Build Back Avery” You can register for a photo session here!

  • Are there road closures in your area? What is the best way to reach you?

There is still lots of infrastructure under repair post-Helene, but also many roads that are back to normal function! We have made a map that we will continue to update and things may change, and you can see that map by scrolling to the bottom of the page here.

  • How do we care for our tree when we get home?

We have a whole page dedicated to that here!
